Banned Books

Banned Books Week is September 27 – October 4, 2008.  As a retired librarian, I would like to encourage everyone to read a banned book so you will understand the threat of censorship.

There has been some talk in the news recently regarding the Republican Vice Presidential Nominee, Gov. Sarah Palin.  Although Gov. Palin never actually had books removed from the public library when she was mayor, she did ask the librarian whether and how to go about doing so if it were necessary.  Thank goodness the librarian held her ground and stood up to Mayor Palin.

Believe me when I tell you this is not an easy thing to do, primarily because people who want to ban books are extraordinarily passionate about it and tend to be confrontational.

You can find here a list of the top 25 most controversial banned books as well as links to where they can be read free online.
